6 Components of Wellness and How They Impact Your Overall Health

There's a difference between health and wellness. Getting over the symptoms of the flu is a health concern. Keeping a positive attitude while feeling ill is a wellness attribute. Keep reading to learn more.

What is wellness? It’s more than simply the absence of illness.

At New Tampa Wellness Clinic, we see your physical health as an essential part of the wellness journey, though it’s only one aspect of a multifaceted approach to living. We encourage our patients to proactively pursue a complete state of health encompassing six components of wellness, each with its impact on your overall health. The following are six components of wellness.

1. Nutrition — you are what you eat

If you fail to gas up the car, you won’t get far on a road trip. The same is true with your body. And just as your vehicle responds better to the fuel quality, so will you. Building and maintaining a diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats while minimizing low-nutrition processed foods is a foundation for health. It provides the calories you need for energy and the building blocks necessary for your body to maintain itself. We can help with nutritional intravenous (IV) therapy and weight management services.

2. Sleep — rest and recovery

Sleep is essential for physical and mental well-being. The quantity and quality of sleep matter. Without enough, your body and brain can’t complete the downtime maintenance necessary to rejuvenate your body and refresh your mind. Creating an effective sleep strategy, from regular timing to a refreshing sleep space, is essential to wellness.

3. Physical activity — you’re made to move

Your body works best when moving — joints stay lubricated and nourished. Your body retains strength and flexibility while your muscles consume energy, leading to better metabolic chemistry. Physical activity helps control weight, and when you choose to do things you love, physical activity controls stress and satisfies your mental state.

4. Social connectedness — people need people

While being socially connected to others carries a unique definition for everyone, there’s no escaping the fact that wellness in complete isolation is difficult to achieve. You need your own combination of family, friends, co-workers, and acquaintances to connect and relate to the world.

5. Mindfulness — slowing down

Humans are great problem solvers, and our minds can process so much information. That sometimes makes awareness difficult. Mindfulness is about putting the mental gears into neutral to reflect on the simple beauties surrounding you. Meditation doesn’t need to be formal. It can be as simple as literally stopping to smell the flowers. Exercises like tai chi and yoga combine meditative states with physical activity.

6. Environment — wellness that surrounds

Your surroundings support healthful living. Organized spaces that are pleasing and aesthetically address your mindset daily. Time spent in nature serves as a recharging element for many people. When you’re happy with your surroundings, you’re more likely to be satisfied with yourself — a key wellness goal.
